Have you ever read a story in the Bible that left you wondering what in the world was going on? Perhaps it had odd details like tombs, pigs, or demons. That is exactly how the story of Jesus and the Gerasene Demoniac can seem to many people. (Just so you understand, “Demoniac” here means a person who seems to have demons inside them.) It’s a strange story that may cause you to ask, “What should I do with this? Did this actually occur exactly as it says? And those pigs, what about them? And what am I supposed to learn about God and evil?”
It’s easy to get a bit confused or even uneasy when reading such a dramatic story. You may be worried about whether it fits with how you see the world or what you are comfortable discussing with others. These are valid questions, and you’re certainly not the only one asking.
The goal of this guide, “Jesus and the Gerasene Demoniac: When It’s Bad to God Mad,” is not to make the story nicer or give you a perfect explanation for all of it. Instead, we’re going on yet another “unburdening” adventure. We will look at the story of Jesus and the Gerasene Demoniac as a dramatic old story with many things to teach us. We’ll look at what this encounter with Jesus meant to the people who first heard it and what lasting truths it offers us today about Jesus’ power, his care for people, and how he deals with evil. Our hope is that you’ll discover a richer, more meaningful way to understand this story that sets your faith free to grow.
